A popular decorating idea right now is to cover a wall completely with a surprising object, or to hang a surprising quantity of more ordinary objects on the wall. Case in point: shutters. A man recently brought some large shutters into The Living Room Emporium, and we haven’t decided what to do with them exactly. Thanks to “Country Living Magazine,” now we know.
They featured a wall covered in shutters – all kinds, colors, sizes. It’s an unusual idea, floor-to-ceiling shutters, not for blocking sunlight, nor to increase privacy.
One customer came in a few weeks ago seeking a huge array of plates. She wanted all different plates – various colors, shapes, sizes and types. We sold her fine china dessert plates, decorative candy dishes and hand-painted, scalloped edged beauties. She probably created her neighborhood’s prettiest wall.
Several young men (okay, “young” in our book is anyone under 35) have come in and requested crosses in large number. They want to plaster one wall with as many different crosses as they can collect. We’ve sold ceramic, iron and wood crosses, and continue to sell them.
Another unusual item hangs on our wall: chairs. We could say it is for display purposes in our store, but hanging chairs is a great way to conserve space in the home.
Is it progress or just unusual? Well, I’d like to say that the fact I’ve had both impractical chairs and dilapidated shutters bulging from my walls at home for many years. I’d say it’s less likely we are ahead of the fashion curve, and more likely we are unusual.
